Using JAlbum to make a web photo albumn with ProPowerHost

How many times have you taken pictures with your web camera and never used them for anything? Using your ProPowerHost web hosting account, now you can now easily make photo albums(including slideshows) and post them to the web!

Making a photo album in flash or html can be time consuming and a hassle, because you must choose and buy image editing software, and then use it to resize and compress photos. Then you still have to design and make the webpage. JAlbum makes it very fast and easy plus it does all this for you. While it will rotate images upright if needed, it will not correct poor images (like exposure, white balance). For that you must still use image editing programs. Plus the program is FREE! Once created, the album can be uploaded to your ProPowerHost web hosting account.

First you must download and install JAlbum on your computer. Now you open it up, drag a folder with your pictures in it to the Image directory field in the program. Preview and choose a skin (page design), then go through all your settings and check or uncheck features.

Image order will arrange photos by name or date. If you use them, Watermarks text will usually appear at the bottom of full screen images. EXIF fields are camera and camera settings which can optionally be displayed with the photo. Image bounds are thumbnail and image sizes. They will still retain their aspect ratio (so there is no size distortion).

In image linking I suggest Link to scaled down images only, unless you intend to use them as wallpaper.

The Advanced tab lets you set Jpeg compression (decreases file size). 90% with High Quality scaling usually looks great. You will have to test it out to find how much compression you need before you start losing quality.

Finally go back to the main tab. You can name the output directory anything. That will be the name of your folder that contains all generated album materials on your computer. Now click Make album. The finished album is now on your computer.

To publish the album to the web, Click Publish. For FTP Server field, put yoursitename.com (meaning the name of your site). Remote directory name anything you want. It will be the folder in your web space where your album is stored. Enter your username and password. Click Upload all.

To save the ftp upload settings that you just used for a future upload, click Accounts. Enter a name in the New account profile field, click add. Now you can use that profile next time instead or entering it again.

The optional preview link you would enter manually. The preview link feature did not work on my windows XP system, and is not necessary anyway.

To get to your photo album on the web: If your site was yoursite.com and remote directory was named album, the link to it would be http://yoursite.com/album
If you changed the file name in settings from index to photo, then you would use http://yoursite.com/album/photo.html or whatever folder name and page name is that you chose.

If you want to save this entire project for add ons or changes later (like more pictures), click file save project as and name it something you will remember.

If you are more advanced, you can even make custom skins or edit the html file on your computer, after it is generated!
